Summer Sports Tournament
For Community Development

In 2019, the FBI reported that “Brownsville crime rates are 9% higher than the national average, while violent crimes are 223% higher than the national average.” This devastating statistic is emblematic of the harsh reality many of Brownsville’s at-risk youth have to live through day in and day out.

In an effort to tackle this issue head on, TrudyAnn Williams, Founder and CEO of Destiny Helpers Outreach, created the Summer Sports Tournament for Community Development.

Sports tournaments aren’t just fun and entertainment—they help contribute to the physical and mental health of those involved and facilitate a safe and supportive environment for the youth.

They also promote invaluable life skills such as teamwork, tolerance, and interpersonal communication.

As such, the Brownsville Summer Sports Tournament serves as a tool for keeping our at-risk youth all across Brooklyn from falling into the grip of crime, anti-social behavior, and violent-conflict.
